LETHBRIDGE – A bail hearing has been set for a 59-year old Lethbridge man, accused in what Lethbridge Police believe was a random sexual assault.

Between 3 and 4 a.m. on November 7, a man gained entry to a north side home through a basement door and found a 15-year old girl in her bedroom. The suspect took steps to prevent her from screaming and alerting other members of her family, then sexually assaulted her.

Police arrived on scene at 5:14 a.m., cordoned off the area and found a man matching the suspect’s description.

Darral Gerard Courtoreille – a 59-year-old convicted sex offender – was charged with break and enter, sexual assault and sexual interference.

Staff Sgt. Scott Woods with the Lethbridge Police Service Criminal Investigation Section called the victim the true hero in the case, saying, “She was outstanding and composed beyond belief from our standpoint and to provide us with the necessary details to really get a head start on the investigation and the ultimate arrest of this individual.”

The bail hearing for Courtoreille is set for December 7.
