Teddy bears and toques rain down in Hurricanes sixth straight win

Dec 2, 2016 | 11:42 PM

LETHBRIDGE – On a night that saw the Lethbridge Hurricanes and their fans support those in the need in our community, the club also continued what is becoming one of the hottest runs in the Western Hockey League.

Despite getting off to a slow start Friday (Dec. 2) night, in which the Hurricanes fell behind 2-0 in the first 10 minutes to the Red Deer Rebels, they roared back for a 5-3 win – their sixth in a row.

Jordy Bellerive started the comeback, scoring his first of two goals on the night late in the first period, and bringing on a hail of teddy bears and toques.

The goal kick started the 21st annual Canadian Tire Toque and Teddy Toss. The team will now deliver the items collected to a number of local organizations, including the Chinook Regional Hospital, Salvation Army, Streets Alive, Blood Tribe Police, Taber Food Bank, Head Dress Society, Sik ooh kotoki Friendship Society, Piikani Schools Napi Friendship Association in Pincher Creek and Lethbridge Family Services Angel Tree for Kids.

Helping out on the scoresheet were two familiar names who have been a big part of the offence this season, as Giorgio Estephan fired two in and Tyler Wong notched his team leading 18th goal of the season.

The win improves the Canes’ record to 13-11-1-2, and is part of an impressive streak that started on a road trip through the U.S. Division. Since that first win against Everett, the Hurricanes have outscored their opponents 26-15.

The Hurricanes won’t have much time to enjoy Friday’s win, as they are right back at it Saturday (Dec. 3) against the Rebels, this time in Red Deer.
