LETHBRIDGE – An incident in the downtown area in which a man appeared to be travelling on a city transit bus with a firearm, has come to a very quick resolution.

On November 24 around 6:30 p.m., 30-year old Victor Running Rabbit of Lethbridge boarded the bus and was observed by the driver to be playing with what looked like a hand gun. The driver informed dispatch and pulled the bus over in the 500 block of 4 Avenue South until Lethbridge Police arrived.

Once on scene, LPS approached the bus with weapons drawn and Running Rabbit pointed the object at an officer. After being told to drop it several times, Running Rabbit finally complied and was taken into custody.

After pleading guilty to a charge of possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, the court was informed that Running Rabbit’s uncle had ordered a pair of replica revolvers and had asked him to pick them up for him, which he was doing at the time. It was also noted that Running Rabbit is currently under suicide watch, that he has some indications of a significant mental health issue and that he was un-medicated at the time of the incident.

The judge agreed with a joint submission from the Crown and defence, asking for 75-days in jail. Running Rabbit was given credit for 18-days of pre-trial custody, meaning he has 57 days left to serve.

After his release, Running Rabbit will have one year of probation and he must seek assessment and counselling.
