EDMONTON –  The Lethbridge Hurricanes put a dent in the Oil Kings 3-game win streak in Edmonton Monday night.

The first meeting of the season between the two clubs saw the Canes post a 6-4 win.

Edmonton opened the game with a high sticking penalty less than three minutes in and then there was a rapid succession of three goals.

The Canes Egor Babenko was first on the scoreboard at the 8:25 mark, assisted by Brett Davis.   The Oil Kings responded with their own goal less than a minute and a half later, only to have Lethbridge’s Tyler Wong lift his team ahead 2-1 just 30 seconds later.

The remainder of the first period saw the teams tally minor penalties for roughing, tripping, slashing and embellishment.  The Canes changed out goalies at the end of the first and brought in Stuart Skinner.

The second frame began the same as the first, with Edmonton registering a penalty.  However, the Oil Kings then lobbed in back-to-back goals at the six and seven minute marks.

The Canes were back on the board near the end of the period, with a goal from Zane Franklin tying the score at three goals at 16:32. Then 20 seconds before the buzzer, the Canes’ Jordy Bellerive put one through the pipes, pulling his team ahead.

In the opening minutes of the third, Egor Babenko notched his second goal of the game and half way through the frame, Giorgio Estephan pumped in the insurance goal.

The Oil Kings fought back to register a fourth goal and then pulled the goalie in the last minute for the extra man.

Edmonton outshot the Canes 30-28 and both teams logged 12 minutes in penalties.

The Hurricanes, now 14-11-2-2 with 29 points, are home to Regina on Wednesday night.
