City hears the voices of residents at first 100K Day

LETHBRIDGE – The City of Lethbridge is reporting a lot of success from its first 100K Day this fall.

More than 300 residents showed up at City Hall on October 12 to speak with ten different project exhibitors and learn all about Lethbridge’s Municipal Development Plan (MDP), as well as the Transit, Cycling and River Valley Master Plans.

Feedback from 200 of those in attendance has now been compiled into a report that’s available for the public to view on the City of Lethbridge website.

“Each project is used kind of uniquely. A lot of the public feedback is incorporated to re-confirm values and making sure we’re getting the appropriate direction,” Andrew Malcolm, community planner, explained.

“With the update to our Municipal Development Plan, we are taking all this information and funneling it into that, ensuring that our city’s master plan actually reflects the values of our community.”

He says he wasn’t particularly surprised by the comments, but rather reassured, noting that residents are realizing that it’s time for change and the City is open to and expecting it.

Malcolm says a wide range of feedback and innovative engagement are both valuable tools for the City of Lethbridge as they plan for a population of 100,000. “With some of our typical public engagement where we have just an open house for one project, we have very limited people, and our residents are typically either very pro or very against the project.

“Whereas having this 100K Day, it brings people out and they learn about projects they might not have known were going on,” he continued. “They’re that missing middle that we’ve been trying to reach out to.”

Since the first 100K Day was so successful, the City is already planning another in the spring of 2017 which will feature new projects and other updates. The 100K Conversations series is expected to continue over the next two and a half years, wrapping up with the 2019 MDP update.
