More time needed for attempted murder trial for Lethbridge youth

Dec 15, 2016 | 1:17 PM

LETHBRIDGE – More time will be needed for the trial of a Lethbridge youth, charged with attempted murder and sexual assault.

The individual – who can’t be named because of his age – is accused in a violent attack on a 45-year old Lethbridge woman last year.

Lethbridge Police say a man entered a home in the 2100 block of Palm Road South just before 5-am on May 3, 2015, sexually assaulted the woman, dragged her outside where the sexual assault continued, then slit her throat and fled the scene.

The victim was taken to hospital where she required immediate surgery.

The trial started December 5 and was scheduled to run until Friday (Dec. 16), however, it has now been adjourned because more time is needed.

After the Crown concluded their case this morning (Dec. 15) – which is currently covered under a publication ban, subject to the judge allowing certain evidence – the defence explained that they are considering an application that, if granted, would require legal-aid to pay for a DNA expert to take the stand for the defence.

With only one day left in the scheduled trial, it was agreed upon to adjourn until January 18, 2017, at which time the defence will provide an update to the court, and a continuation will be set for the trial.
