Emergency services urge fire safety this holiday season

LETHBRIDGE – It’s the most wonderful time of the year, but it can also be one of the most dangerous.

According to Lethbridge Fire and Emergency Services, residential fires are all too common during the holidays. Mark Hoveling, fire prevention officer, says most usually start in the kitchen.

Last year, there were four home fires during this time of year, two of which were caused by leaving a stove unattended. Those added up to a total of $500,000 in damages.

Hoveling noted that over recent years, the value of home fires has increased. That’s something he attributes to people being away from home when a fire starts.

He hopes everyone will keep this important message in mind.

“Just slow down. The holidays can be a very busy time. If you’re in the kitchen, enjoy your time in the kitchen, don’t have too many things on your mind so that we can prevent that home kitchen fire.”

While kitchen fires might be the main culprit, Lethbridge Emergency services also wants to make residents aware of some additional safety tips:

– Always stub smoking materials, like cigarettes, completely out and dispose of them safely;
– Ensure space heaters are at least one metre away from all combustibles, such as draped or curtains;
– Space heaters should be plugged directly into the wall, not an extension cord;
– Candles should be in a sturdy holder, and should never be left unattended;
– Wires and extension cords should be replaced immediately if bare spots or fraying happen;
– Ensure natural Christmas trees are watered regularly and placed away from heat;
– Extension cords should only be used for the equipment for which they are rated.
