Date set for Christmas Tree Recycling Program

Dec 29, 2016 | 10:38 AM

LETHBRIDGE – The City of Lethbridge and several local youth groups are coming together once again to help divert Christmas trees from the landfill.

The Christmas Tree Recycling Program has been running in our city for over 20-years, with over 75,000 trees being put to good use after the holiday season.

On January 14, you are asked to put your tree out at your usual garbage collection location, but away from your garbage bin, and you must remove all of the decorations, lights and tinsel. The city also noted that it could take a couple of days for your tree to be picked-up.

After being collected, the trees are chipped to make environmentally friendly mulch. The mulch is stored at Peenaquim Park – located off Stafford Drive North – and is available for free to the public. It can be used in planting beds, which reduces the need for watering and weeding.

Youth groups looking for a fundraiser will receive $5,000 for one day of collecting trees around the city.

If the January 14 date doesn’t work for you, there are other options available. The Waste and Recycling Centre will take your tree at no cost on Saturdays or for $5, Monday to Friday. You can also use the Large Item Service and schedule a time to have your tree picked-up, however it will then end up in the landfill.
