Galt Museum says final farewell to retiring curator

Jan 3, 2017 | 3:33 PM

LETHBRIDGE – As the Galt Museum and Archives and Fort Whoop-up bid farewell to curator, Wendy Aitkens, they also welcome a fresh face to the team.

Aitkens served Lethbridge for 26 years through teaching, collections and tireless curatorial work. She’s known as the driving force behind such features like Smile! Capturing our Lives with Cameras, The Mighty Bridge to a Legacy of Adventure and Art and Miss Edith Fanny Kirk.

As Aitkens gets ready for retirement, the Galt plans to stay connected with “her talent and kind generosity in decades to come.”

Aimee Benoit is now poised to take up the position, with years of curatorial experience from the Glenbow Museum and Calgary Stampede to offer the community.

She’s already worked with the Lethbridge museum in collections and research, but also boasts two Masters degrees in western Canadian history and heritage conservation. Benoit researches and teaches in those fields at two Alberta universities.

Susan Burrows-Johnson, Galt CEO and executive director, says she’s thrilled to welcome Benoit to the team. The newest From Pianos to Power Chords exhibit opens to the public on February 4.
