Hurricanes blow three goal lead in 5-4 loss to Broncos

SWIFT CURRENT – What looked like a solid road game for the Lethbridge Hurricanes and one that would lead to another two points in the WHL standings quickly went sour Tuesday night (Jan. 3) in Swift Current, as they fell 5-4 to the Broncos.

The Hurricanes gave up the first goal of the game just three minutes in on the power-play, but took charge late in the period and to start the second.

Giorgio Estephan scored his 20th of the season at the 4:39 mark and added his second of the evening with the man advantage 10 minutes later to give the Canes the lead. Igor Merezhko would then register his first of the campaign – again on the power-play – and Tyler Wong would fire home his team leading 26th goal two minutes later, seemingly putting his club in the driver’s seat with a 4-1 lead.

Things would go down-hill from there.

Just 19 seconds after Wong’s goal, the Broncos would respond with one of their own. With the momentum swinging their way, Swift Current would proceed to score two more goals in the second period – just over 30 seconds apart – knotting the score at 4-4 going into the third.

The Broncos would quickly pull ahead, scoring their second power-play goal of the contest and the game winner at 3:34 of the third period.

The loss – which snapped a two game winning streak for Lethbridge – drops the Hurricanes road record below the .500 mark on the season to 8-9-1-2 and their overall record to 20-14-3-2.

Fortunately, a solid month of December did give the Canes some breathing room, as they still hold a five point lead over Edmonton for second in the Central Division.

They won’t have to wait long for a shot at redemption, as Lethbridge moves on the play the Warriors Wednesday night (Jan. 4) in Moose Jaw.
