Tyler Wong reaches career milestone in win over Edmonton

LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Hurricanes came dangerously close to repeating an ugly storyline Saturday night (Jan. 14), as they held on for a tense 6-5 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings.

It came one night after an implosion at the Enmax Centre, which saw the Hurricanes race out to a 5-1 lead over Prince George, then watched it slip away in the third, before losing 6-5 in a shootout.

Alec Baer opened the scoring for the Hurricanes on the power-play just over a minute into the game – his first of two on the evening, giving him four goals in the three games he’s played with the team since joining them at the WHL trade deadline on January 10. The goal also had a special meaning, as Hurricanes captain, Tyler Wong, picked up an assist for his 250th point in 290 games in the Western Hockey League.

The Canes then pulled out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Brennan Riddle and Wong.

From that point, the two clubs would trade goals three times, giving Lethbridge a 6-3 edge early in the third. That’s when things would start to get scary for the Hurricanes.

Outshooting the Hurricanes 12-6 in the final frame, Edmonton would score twice in the final 10 minutes – one of which came with 1:28 left on the clock – to pull within one. Fortunately, that’s where the Canes would stop the bleeding, holding on for the win.

Of note, Lethbridge backup, Ryan Gilchrist picked up his third win of the season, improving the Hurricanes record to 24-15-3-3, and giving them an eight-point cushion over Red Deer for second in the Central Division.

With the win, the Hurricanes capped a three game set with the Oil Kings that was played over the last two weeks, in which they outscored Edmonton by a combined 20-13.

The Hurricanes will play their third straight game Sunday night (Jan. 15) as they travel to Calgary to play the Hitmen.
