Another comeback for the Canes; down the Swift Current Broncos 5-1

LETHBRIDGE – A strong third period allowed the Lethbridge Hurricanes to start off a two game home stand with a landslide 5-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos Wednesday (Jan. 18) night.

It’s been an up and down start to 2017 for the Canes, but this victory came as a high point after they were edged 6-5 in overtime by the Calgary Hitmen on Sunday (Jan. 15).

Both teams were aggressive and evenly matched through the first two periods on Wednesday, with nearly identical shots on goal. The Hurricanes’ Giorgio Estephan, assisted by Alec Baer and Brennan Menell, managed to open scoring late in the first period at the 14:28 mark.

Connor Chaulk answered back for the Broncos in the second frame, finding the back of the net on one of the team’s three power play opportunities. The Swift Current goalie of the night, Jordan Papirny, just couldn’t hold on to the tie, though, as Ryan Vandervlis scored the game winner ten minutes later. Stuart Skinner was pounded by 28 shots, but only allowed a single goal.

It was a run away for the Canes by the third period. They picked up some steam after Vandervlis made yet another goal, with an assist from Zane Franklin and Brennan Riddle. Two more from Jordy Bellerive and Zak Zborosky solidified the win with just five minutes left in the last period.

In the final two minutes, the Hurricanes’ Igor Merezhko and the Broncos’ Tanner Mole dropped their gloves. Both were sent off the ice with five-minute majors for fighting. All three stars for the game went to Hurricanes players Stuart Skinner, Ryan Vandervlis and Zane Franklin.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes still sit second in the central division, just four points behind the Medicine Hat Tigers, with an overall 25-15-4-3 record on the season. They’ll now take a two day break before coming back to the ENMAX Centre to face off with the Calgary Hitmen on Saturday (Jan. 21).
