150 trees to commemorate Canada’s 150th birthday

LETHBRIDGE – Three major parks will be the sites where Lethbridge marks Canada’s 150th birthday.

On Monday (Jan. 16), Council unanimously approved groves of 50 trees each to be designated in Henderson, Legacy and Nicholas Sheran parks to commemorate the country’s milestone. The plan is to have them in the ground on or around Canada Day this year.

Councillor Jeff Coffman, who brought forward the resolution, couldn’t yet say how they’ll be marked, but stressed that he wants a place for people to stop and be able to learn more about why the trees were planted.

“You never plant a tree for yourself. A tree is always planted for the future,” Coffman continued. “I think the thing that council sees in this is that we are leaving something that 10, 50, 100 years from now people will actually still be able to see and enjoy.”

The City of Lethbridge typically plants around 600 trees per year. These 150 trees will be included and funded as part of the annual tree planting program.
The parks department is now working on a planting shedule and figuring out what species of trees will be best suited for Lethbridge
