Streaking Hurricanes win eighth in a row

Feb 8, 2017 | 9:28 PM

RED DEER – It would appear Lethbridge has been working on their power-play.

The Hurricanes reeled off their eighth straight win Wednesday (Feb. 8) night in Red Deer, as they topped the Rebels 7-3. It also happened to be the 14th game in which they came out with at least one point.

The two clubs traded goals midway through the first period, and again early in the second, knotting the score at 2-2.

Then the Hurricanes man-advantage went to work.

It started with Lethbridge defenseman Brennan Menell pulling the Canes ahead 3-2 at the 10:20 mark of the second, scoring his 11th of the season with a Rebel in the box. Just over four minutes later, Egor Babenko would add another to close out the period. The power-play continued to click in the third, with Tyler Wong and Calen Addison taking advantage of Red Deer penalties.

The Rebels would find the back of the net once more with 1:25 left on the clock, but Hurricanes centre Jadon Joseph would finish things off with 30 seconds left to close things out.

Meanwhile, the Lethbridge penalty-kill went a perfect three-for-three.

Their scorching run has the Hurricanes six points behind Medicine Hat for first place in the Central Division. More importantly, it now has them a distant 15-points ahead of Red Deer for second in the division.

The Hurricanes return to home ice Friday (Feb. 10) night, as they host the Prince Albert Raiders. The last time they met, Lethbridge edged PA 5-4 in regulation.
