Hurricanes win 4-2 in milestone game for Tyler Wong

LETHBRIDGE – The newest members of the Hurricanes helped captain Tyler Wong celebrate his 300th WHL game Friday night, providing all the offence in 4-2 win over Prince Albert.

Alec Baer opened the scoring near the end of the first, picking up his 10th of the season and continuing the torrid pace he’s maintained since joining the club at the trade deadline.

The Raiders pushed back hard in the second period, peppering Canes netminder Stuart Skinner and outshooting Lethbridge 17-8. Despite the onslaught, PA would only manage to get one puck by Skinner – a shorthanded marker to tie the score 1-1.

The third was where the Hurricanes started to pull away, with deadline additions Matt Alfaro and Zak Zborosky getting on the board. Curtis Miske pulled the Raiders back to within one with 1:24 to go in the game, but Baer would pick up his second of the contest – assisted by Wong – firing the insurance goal into the empty net with under a minute to play.

With the assist, Wong has put up an impressive 265-points (131-goals and 134-assists) in his 300 regular season games played.

The win keeps alive the Hurricanes nine game winning streak and 15-game point streak, which has somewhat shockingly only allowed them to keep pace with the Medicine Hat Tigers – who beat Calgary 7-2 Friday night to maintain a six point lead for first place in the Central Division standings. Meanwhile, a Red Deer loss now has the Hurricanes a distant 19-points ahead of the Rebels for second place.

Lethbridge will get a chance to make up some ground on the Tigers when the two clubs meet in Medicine Hat Saturday (Feb. 11). The Hurricanes will then cap a busy weekend with another road game against the Kootenay Ice on Sunday.
