Tigers blank Hurricanes in Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT – The Hurricanes nine game winning streak and 15-game point streak came to a screeching halt Saturday (Feb. 11) night in Medicine Hat.

The Tigers dominated the game – outshooting the Hurricanes 38-19 over three periods – en-route to a 5-0 win.

Medicine Hat got things started just under four minutes into the contest, with Clayton Kirichenko scoring on the power-play. The Tigers penalty kill extended the lead over a minute into the second, as James Hamblin added a short-handed goal. Ryan Jevne, Zach Fischer and Mason Shaw would round out the scoring.

Shortly after going down 5-0 midway through the third period, the Canes Alec Baer was penalized for roughing and handed a 10-minute misconduct.

The Tigers win – their fourth in a row – gives them an eight point cushion over the Hurricanes in the Central Division. It also pulls them to within six points of the Regina Pats for top spot in the WHL.

Fortunately for Lethbridge, their run of hot play over the last few weeks has given them significant breathing room. They still hold an 18-point lead over Red Deer for second place in the division.

The Hurricanes will cap a three game weekend Sunday (Feb. 12) in Cranbrook, as they take on the Kootenay Ice, a team that sits second last in the league and has lost five in a row.
