Higher levels of Chlorine temporarily added to Lethbridge’s drinking water

LETHBRIDGE – If you notice your water smelling and tasting more chlorine-like, it’s because the City of Lethbridge has increased the level of the chemical in the water.

Water and Wastewater Manager Doug Kaupp says because of the ice breakup on the river, there has been a lot more debris in the water going into the local treatment plant, and the city wants to make sure it remains safe for everyone to drink.

He says the change will likely be noticeable as the chemical makes its way through the system over the next few days.

Chlorine is used to disinfect the water, so bacteria like Salmonella and E-coli are killed off, along with viruses that can cause mild to severe illnesses.
