SASKATOON –  The Lethbridge Hurricanes are just two points back of the division lead after a 5-4 OT win in Saskatoon Saturday night. The Canes won all four of their games in the last five nights, making it 18 wins out of their last 20 games. The team is sitting at 42-17-4-3 on the season.

The Blades’ Baylon Shmyr had his team on the scoreboard within two minutes of the puck drop. It wasn’t until mid-way through the first that Egor Babenko tied the score, assisted by Alec Baer and Jodry Bellerive.  Team mate Georgio Estephan put the Canes ahead 2-1 less than two minutes later, on a goal assisted by Tyler Wong and Brennan Menell.

The second frame opened with Baylon Shmry again firing the opening volley to tie up the game.  The next action was a series of penalties against the Canes.  Giorgio Estephan got two minutes for slashing, followed by a penalty for Calen Addison for Interference on the Goaltender. With four minutes left in the period, Zane Franklin and the Blades’ Jantzen Leslie were both hit with five minute majors for fighting.  Jordy Bellerive finished off the period with a penalty for Interference on the Goaltender.

In between the penalties, Shmyr added his second goal of the game and Kirby Dach took advantage of a power play to put his team ahead 4-2.

If the Blades owned the second period, the final frame belonged to the Canes. Zak Zborosky took advantage of a power play to slide one through the pipes, assisted by Giorgio Estephan and Tyler Wong. At the period’s mid-point, Giorgio Estephan fired in a goal to tie the game four all, which is where the game remained until the end of the game, forcing OT.

As they did Wednesday night in Brandon, the Canes wasted little time dealing with the OT.  Less than a minute in, Brennan Menell lobbed in the game winner with the assist from Giorgio Estephan.

The Canes next game is Wednesday night at the Enmax when they host Edmonton.
