Sutters, Davidson, Pearn among 2017 Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame inductees

RED DEER – Central Alberta’s most famous hockey family and one of the key figures for Canada’s national women’s hockey program are among this year’s inductees into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Sutter family is being inducted, including all seven brothers (Brent, Brian, Darryl, Duane, Gary, Rich, Ron) and their parents, Grace and Louis.

Six of the Sutter brothers combined to play 4,994 NHL regular season games, piling up 2934 points and 7,224 penalty minutes, and 603 playoff games where they collected another 275 points and 1,170 penalty minutes.

As players, Duane (4) and Brent (2) won six Stanley Cups. Darryl has won two as head coach with Los Angeles. Brent won the 2001 Memorial Cup as GM and head coach of the Red Deer Rebels. Brian coached the Bentley Generals to an Allan Cup title in 2009.

Their mother, Grace, is still an active member of the Viking community. Father Louie passed away in 2005.

Mel Davidson, best known as the head coach of Canada’s women’s hockey teams that won gold at the Winter Olympics in 2006 and 2010, is also being inducted into the hall of fame.

The native of Coronation and former Red Deer College student also has four world championships on her coaching resume and is currently the head scout for Hockey Canada’s Women’s National Team programs.

Also being inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame this year is Perry Pearn. The Stettler native and member of the 1970-71 Centennial Cup Champion Red Deer Rustlers, Pearn has more than four decades of coaching experience in the ACAC, CCAA and NHL. He is currently an Assistant Coach with the Vancouver Canucks.

The other inductees this year include:

– Bill Hay, Stanley Cup champion, and former head of the Hockey Hall of Fame;

– Tony Kollman, one of the most noteable senior hockey players of the 1960s;

– Perry Pearn, second-winningest coach in ACAC history, including six ACAC championships;

– Glen Sather, former coach, general manager and president of the 5-time Stanley Cup champion Edmonton Oilers.

Each of the inductees will be recognized at the AHHF Awards Gala in Canmore in July.
