Lethbridge courthouse opening to the public for Law Day 2017

Mar 29, 2017 | 9:40 AM

LETHBRIDGE – Law Day will once again give Lethbridge and area residents an inside look at the justice system.

The theme for this year is “Heroes of Justice.” The annual event features courthouse tours, forensics demonstrations, kids activities and a special superhero mock trial.

It’s set for April 8, 2017, from 9 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Lethbridge Provincial Courthouse. A full activity schedule is posted above.

The Lethbridge Legal Guidance Society will be hosting its ask-a-lawyer session, as well. Residents can book a 30-minute, face to face appointment with a volunteer lawyer, with no qualification requirements.

Barb Bodnar, a paralegal with the society, suggests that those interested come with a list of questions prepared, in order to best utilize the short amount of time.

“This assists residents in comprehending the legal system, at least understanding what type of forms may be required in regard to their legal issue.

“Also, it gives them some form of idea on court filing fees — as some of the residents cannot afford those fees — and any additional documents that they may need to complete to improve their legal issue,” she continued. “It also greatly assists self-represented litigants in better understanding the legal and judicial system, if they have to self-represent and appear in court.”

Session space is limited. Bodnar asks that appointments be booked before April 5, by calling 403-380-6338.
