Increased indecent acts in river valley prompts action from police

Apr 20, 2017 | 3:14 PM

LETHBRIDGE –   City Police have increased patrols and are working with the parks department in order to deter indecent activity in the river valley.

Officers are responding to what has become a chronic problem over the past few months, with couples engaging in indecent acts near the Elks Compound. Sex acts are occurring in green spaces, in view of other residents who are using the park. The acts have been witnessed and reported by the public and officers conducting routine patrols.

In an effort to deter the activity, members of the Downtown Policing Unit have increased patrols and the City of Lethbridge will be removing trees, brush and branches in the area that is most commonly being used by offenders, in order to further deter the activity.

So far, police have issued warnings to offenders caught in indecent activity, but they advise that criminal charges are possible and will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Police will be patrolling the river valley and other parks and green spaces to ensure this indecent activity is not simply displaced to other public areas.

Anyone who observes suspicious activity, including lewd conduct – in the river valley or anywhere else in the city – is asked to contact the Public Safety Communications Centre at 403-328-4444.
