Pool repairs won’t delay swimming: city

LETHBRIDGE – Less than a year after it reopened, major repairs are underway at the Henderson Pool.

Ashley Matthews, project coordinator, told Lethbridge News Now the general contractor is correcting deficiencies at the pool site. Some of the pipes leading to the pool inlets are aligned incorrectly and could crack, so crews are digging down to the pipes to realign them.

Other work is described as minor – workers are replacing some bolts and doing some painting. And a boiler that is not providing sufficient heat will be checked in May.

“Every project, after it’s over and it’s open to the public, always has some deficiencies that have to be corrected,” Matthews said, “and the Henderson Pool is no exception.”

Matthews explained the pipes are not damaged, but city consultants and the supplier felt it would be prudent to correct their alignment so that there is no cracking or splitting. It’s major work that requires removing some concrete and gravel and excavating to the level of the pipes

“After that work has been completed it actually will be pressure tested to make sure there are no leaks in the entire system,” he added. There are no issues with the walls of the pool itself.

Matthews said there are different theories behind the cause of the deficiencies, but nothing certain. The work and all the costs are covered by the contractor under the project’s warranty.

The pool is slated to open for the season June 15, with staff training starting June 10, weather permitting. Matthews said those dates are not impacted by these repairs.

The work began Monday, April 26, and was scheduled for two weeks though the weather is expected to delay completion.

The Henderson Pool was rebuilt as part of a $10.3 million project that saw the addition of waterslides and other features. It was completed in 2016.
