16- year old Lethbridge student to receive Duke of Edinburgh award

EDMONTON – A 16- year old girl from Lethbridge will be one of just 26 students receiving the prestigious Duke of Edinburgh “Silver award” in Edmonton on Friday (April 28).

Maren Evanson is a student at Lethbridge Collegiate Institute (LCI), and had to complete at least 52 weeks of preparation, training and service to even be considered for it. According to spokesperson Megan Fox, Evanson
worked for 52 weeks training and preparing for a four-day back country horseback tour in Banff.

The award will be presented by the province’s Lieutenant Governor, Lois E. Mitchell.

The internationally acclaimed program is divided into bronze, silver and gold categories. Each category has its own specific requirements for either service, adventurous journey or recreational projects.

A Silver Duke of Edinburgh program has 4 sections including volunteering, physical, skills and expedition. Students 16 years and up to age 25 need to complete at least six months of volunteering time, a minimum of 6 months on either physical or skills sections, and three months on the other. A minimum of one hour per week of work is required, and there is no time limit to complete the tasks required.

Students can not  can not include work done at school or in a paying job.
