Parks Canada seeking input on design of new Waterton visitor centre

Apr 28, 2017 | 5:18 PM

WATERTON – You could have an influence on the design of the new Waterton Lakes National Park visitor centre.

Parks Canada is inviting the public to an open house on Saturday (Apr. 29) to meet with project leaders, and provide input on the look, feel and function of the new facility.

Three design options, prepared by the FWBA Architects, will be setup at the Waterton Community Centre from 1:00 p.m. to 4 p.m..

The current visitor centre was built in 1958. However, its size and location can no longer support the over 500,000 visitors Waterton welcomes on an annual basis, according to a Parks Canada media release.

In July 2015, the Government of Canada provided $7.6-million for the project. Construction is set to get underway in 2018, with the opening anticipated in 2019.

Once a design is chosen, the doors will open to all Canadians with opportunities to learn about the park’s cultural and environmental significance, as well as its status as a World Heritage Site and the world’s first International Peace Park.

Those who can’t make it to the open house can also offer their comments online until May 12 at www.letstalkwatertonvisitorcentre.ca.
