Lethbridge City Council passes new property addressing bylaw

LETHBRIDGE – If you have a residential, commercial or industrial property in Lethbridge that sits next to a lane, you now have 24 months to make sure the front AND back of your home or buildings have your address numbers on it.

The numbers are required to be at least four inches in height, and properties that back onto pathways or other pedestrian walkways are exempt.

Properties that have no rear lane, are also exempt from the new requirements. The City says until now, there has never been a bylaw to define the process for effectively naming and addressing properties in the city.

City Council has approved the new bylaw, indicating that it will help emergency and service providers get to the right place at the right time.

“Most Alberta cities, including Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer and St. Alberta each have an addressing and naming bylaw,” explains Mayor Chris Spearman. “The Naming and Addressing Bylaw will no only help the City of Lethbridge regulate the placement of addresses, but will also help avoid confusion, inefficiencies and potential life safety issues in emergency response situations.”

In the past, Lethbridge city departments also had to maintain their own independent property address databases, causing confusion for public and private contractors. In some instances, there were multiple addresses listed for the same property.

Over the last year, all city departments have been coordinating with one another to create one single coordinated database.

That database will now be made available to all City departments and emergency providers, utility providers and Canada Post.
