9-year old Lethbridge girl wins Provincial “Great Kids Award”

LETHBRIDGE – A 9-year old Lethbridge girl is one of 16 recipients of the Province’s 2017 “Great Kids Award.”
 
Jordyn White Quills won for her perseverance and sense of self- worth despite growing up with little support and moving homes a number of times, according to a her award biography.
 
She is now excelling in her education, making new friends and challenges discriminatory behaviour on school grounds, making it safer for everyone.
 
The “Great Kids Award” recognizes children and teens who accomplish great things, and are strong community role models while overcoming difficult circumstances.
 
Criteria include one or more of the following:
 

  • Personal leadership or initiative
  • Perseverance to accomplish something while overcoming adversity
  • Contribution or achievement on their on life or in the community

 
Nominees must be between the ages of 5 and 18, live in Alberta, and can be nominated by their teachers or coaches.
 
Winners at a ceremony in Edmonton Sunday (May 7) received a trophy, one night’s stay at Edmonton’s Fantasyland Hotel, attraction passes and an iPad.
 
Nominations were made between mid- November and mid-December 2016, and winners were announced in April 2017.

Winners are chosen by an awards selection committee of government and community representatives and event partners.
