EDMONTON – The provincial government has announced a pair of pilot projects to help Albertans looking to work in digital animation and post-production sectors.

Culture and Tourism Minister Ricardo Miranda announced the two grants in Edmonton on Tuesday totalling $3 million. The $1.5 million Interactive Digital Media grant will cover up to 35 per cent of eligible labour expenses for new hires in the digital media field, and the $1.5 million grant for post-production, digital animation and visual effects work will cover 18 per cent of eligible expenses in those fields.

“We have a tremendous amount of homegrown talent ready to work and help expand our vibrant cultural industries,” said Miranda in a statement. “These grants will help Alberta’s post-production and digital media companies grow and create jobs, diversify our economy and make lives better for Albertans.”

The digital media grant is expected to create more than 60 full-time jobs, while the post-production grants is expected to attract and retain up to 80 projects in the province.

The pilot grants will be labour-based, targeting small and medium-sized enterprises. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, with a per-company maximum of $200,000 in grant funding. Applications can be found on the Alberta Government website.

The goal of the grants is to help companies in Alberta’s cultural sector attract more film/television digital media projects, games and animation production to the province and retain cultural professionals.

Alberta currently has 57 post-production establishments, mainly micro enterprises employing one to four people and small companies employing between four and 99 people.
