LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge-Medicine Hat region saw a significant decrease in its unemployment rate in May, according to numbers released by the provincial government Friday, June 9.

The unadjusted three-month moving average for the area was 5.9 per cent, down from 6.8 per cent. One year ago, the rate was 7.4 per cent.

Lethbridge-Medicine Hat has by far the lowest three month average rate of the province’s regions. All saw a decrease except for Calgary, which went from 9 to 9.1 per cent. Red Deer and Camrose-Drumheller saw enough improvement to move past Calgary. The city itself was unchanged at 9.3 per cent, while the city of Edmonton improved from 8.1 to 7.9 per cent.

The province had a net gain of 2,100 jobs on a seasonally adjusted basis, helping push the unemployment rate slightly lower, to 7.8 per cent. The size of the workforce was also smaller, however.

According to Statistics Canada, full-time employment in Alberta increased by 18,900 jobs, while there were 16,700 fewer part-time positions.

Sectors that saw increases in employment were natural resources, agriculture, utilities, manufacturing, transportation/warehousing, professional services, building support, accommodation/food services and the “other” category. In particular, the forestry, fishing, mining, oil and gas sector saw an increase of 4,400 jobs from April.
