LETHBRIDGE – 12 cyclists from the Lethbridge Police Service, Alberta Sheriffs, Lethbridge Correctional Centre, Taber Police service and the Blood Tribe Police service are taking part in the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) 500- km bike ride for Special Olympics.

A special ceremony was held just prior to the the ride, to donate $35,000 to Special Olympics Alberta.

Co-Chair of the Southern Alberta LETR Committee and local Sheriff Matt Burton, is taking part in the ride for the 3rd year. He says it’s an incredible experiece for a great cause.

“It has been fantastic. The friendships you make with the athletes, and the gruelling conditions you sometimes go through? They’re all worth it in the end when you see the look on everybody’s face when we finish this 500 km ride.”

The group will ride for 24 hours to Calgary, stop and take a break. They the travel to Edmonton to meet another group from Fort McMurray. He says they cycle rain or shine, and this year they’re well prepared.

“We never know what to expect, but we know to expect a lot of fun on the bike ride.”

The group is expected to arrive at their destination- the Edmonton “Free Our Finest LETR” event at their southwest Cabela’s location, by noon June 17.

Since 2004, the LETR Ride for Special Olympics has raised more than $400,000.
