End declared to mumps outbreak

Jun 19, 2017 | 11:48 AM

ALBERTA — The mumps outbreak is officially over.

Alberta Health Services has declared an end to the outbreak in the South Zone that dates back to February 16, as well as a second outbreak that was declared in the Edmonton area on March 28.

So far in 2017 the province has confirmed 75 cases of mumps. Forty-eight of them are linked to the two outbreaks.

AHS reminds people mumps is preventable through routine childhood immunizations. Anyone who isn’t sure about their own or their child’s vaccination status can call Health Link or a local public health office. They should also do so if they’re concerned about pain while chewing or swallowing, or swelling in the cheek or jaw.
