Jun 20, 2017 | 6:39 PM

LETHBRIDGE –  Farming Smarter holds its annual Field School June 27th through the 29th.  As with other years, the school will have the same agenda each day and those interested simply choose their preferred day to attend.

This June’s Field School has taken a historical focus with Canada’s 150th anniversary as a general theme. They will be looking at different topics from through the years and the changes that have happened in agriculture through-out the past 150-years.

One of the morning sessions will have Tom Jensen from Green Revolution, looking at fertilizer use and nutrient management and supplementary nutrient use.  The second topic comes from Dr. Shelley Woods and Roger Hohm, who will talk about irrigation development in southern Alberta, as well as the equipment, technology and irrigation management.

The next session is with Rob Dunn and Dr. Bob Blackshaw, who will cover water use efficiency and crop diversity and sustainability.Dr. Ben Ellert and Wayne Lindwall will talk about conservation evolution over 50 years

After lunch in the field, the afternoon will provide select-a-session, which offers 30-minute sessions that run concurrently, where those attending can choose the different topics of interest to them.  Some of those sessions include ‘planting the back 40’, with antique equipment used to provide live seeding and breaking the land demonstrations. There will also be discussion on “Pests of past and present”, an in-field museum, and the day ends with the ever-popular beer garden.

The Field Schools run from 8:00-am to 3:30 and the fee for the day long event is $195.   It will be held at the Farming Smarter research and development site just east of Lethbridge. (211034 HWY 512)
