Attempted murder and sex assault – and the wait goes on

LETHBRIDGE – Denzel Dre Colton Bird chalked up a 16th court appearance via CCTV on Friday, (July 21), with no movement in the case.
Once again, an agent appeared for Bird’s Calgary based lawyer, Tonii Roulston, and stated that Roulston still needed more time to continue discussions. The case will return to court on August 8.
Roulston took over the case at the end of May, from Lethbridge lawyer, Greg White. White was hired shortly after Bird’s arrest in October of 2016, on charges of attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and break and enter.
In February, the Crown asked that the defence make some progress in the case, and in April, White withdrew, with Bird confirming that he wanted new counsel.
Two weeks later, Bird re-hired White, only to dismiss him again on May 26.
The charges against Bird stem from an incident on Sept. 30, 2016, in which a 25-year old Lethbridge woman was brutally assaulted. Following an investigation, the Lethbridge Police Service stated that the attack was believed to have been random, with no connection between the victim and her alleged attacker.
