Alberta Chiefs of Police want new homicide reporting rules

CALGARY – Alberta’s police chiefs have agreed in principal to new rules that could mean the names of homicide victims are withheld from the public.

Medicine Hat police Chief Andy McGrogan, the president of the Alberta Association of Chiefs of Police, says there is an expectation of privacy even for the deceased.

He says new guidelines lay out how and when police forces should name murder victims based on advice from lawyers, police officers, the justice department and Alberta’s privacy commissioner.

Calgary police Chief Roger Chaffin says public interest does not trump privacy so each case will have to be assessed individually.

The chiefs have also come up with a list of recommendations to update Alberta’s Police Act.

They include a call for an independent civilian-led oversight body to look at police misconduct, a streamlined public complaint process and more support for First Nations police services.
