LETHBRIDGE – The Lethbridge Hurricanes have trimmed their number of overage players down to the league mandated three, by dealing 20-year-old forward Alec Baer to the Kootenay Ice.

In exchange, the Hurricanes are getting 19-year-old forward Jake Elmer and a fifth round selection in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

The 6’1, 175-pound Elmer registered 16 points (7g-9a) and 24 penalty minutes in 46 games with the Ice last season. Through five pre-season games this year, he has one goal. He was originally drafted by the Regina Pats in the sixth round (116th overall) of the 2013 draft.

The outgoing Baer was acquired by the Hurricanes just last season at the WHL Trade Deadline, putting up 21 points (12g-9a) and 10 penalty minutes in 30 regular season games, followed by 11 points (3g-8a) in 20 post-season contests.

The trade leaves Giorgio Estephan, Brennan Riddle and Brennan Menell – who remains at the Minnesota Wild training camp – as the club’s three over-agers.

The Hurricanes’ roster currently stands at 26 players, including 16 forwards, eight defencemen and two goaltenders.

They will open the 2017-18 regular season Friday night (Sept. 22) at the ENMAX Centre against the rival Medicine Hat Tigers.
