UCP leadership candidates target Notley, Trudeau during debate

CALGARY – The four United Conservative Party leadership candidates are trying to persuade party members they have what it takes to oust Alberta Premier Rachel Notley in the next election.

The new party, created out of the merger this summer of the Progressive Conservative and Wildrose parties, held its first official debate Wednesday, Sept. 20.

Jason Kenney said his years as a federal cabinet minister under Stephen Harper give him an edge, while Brian Jean said he can relate to Albertans everywhere.

Former Wildrose Party president Jeff Callaway said he knows how to organize at a grassroots level.

And Doug Schweitzer said he stands apart as the most progressive candidate when it comes to social issues, such as support for LGBTQ rights.

All four candidates also say they can fight for Albertans’ interests in Ottawa on issues like equalization and pipelines.

There will be four more debates — in Edmonton, Red Deer, Fort McMurray and Lethbridge — before party members pick a leader next month.
