LETHBRIDGE – A 26-year-old Lethbridge woman and her 32-year-old boyfriend have been charged, after Lethbridge Police followed up on an anonymous tip of suspected child abuse.

The tip was received on Sept. 21, with the information indicating that a young child may be in danger.

Police and Child and Family Services attended a Lethbridge residence immediately to check on the welfare of a two-year-old boy, noting visible injuries to his face and neck. A further examination of the toddler at the Chinook Regional Hospital revealed injuries all over his body. While the child’s mother said he had fallen, medical staff determined the injuries were not consistent with a fall.

The mother faces one count of assault and her boyfriend is charged with assault causing bodily harm.

The man was set to make his first court appearance today (Sept. 25), while the mother has been released on a promise to appear in court on Sept. 29. She has conditions that prohibit her from having any contact with the man or child.

Neither of the individuals can be named to protect the identity of the child, who is now in the care of relatives.

Police did issue a reminder that anyone suspecting that a child is in danger or being abused, should contact police immediately at 403-328-4444 or Child and Family Services at 403-381-5500.
