Hurricanes veterans step up in bounce back win

CALGARY – Having lost back-to-back games, it was the Lethbridge Hurricanes veterans who were the difference makers in a 3-1 bounce back win over the Calgary Hitmen Sunday night (Oct. 15).

For the third straight game, the Hurricanes surrendered the first goal of the evening, as Jakob Stukel beat Lethbridge netminder, Stuart Skinner, just over three minutes in.

The next goal wouldn’t come until nearly the midway point of the second – this one from the Hurricanes – in what turned into a goaltending dual between Skinner and Hitmen starter, Nick Schneider.

Canes captain Giorgio Estephan buried the equalizer, scoring his fourth of the season on a power play. The game winner would then come off the stick of Jordy Bellerive 8:17 in the third – once again on the power play – and Zane Franklin would seal the deal with just over a minute remaining in regulation with an empty netter.

Notable in the win – which happens to be their first road win of the season – is the fact that the Hurricanes’ penalty killed off all four Hitmen power plays, as their own man advantage went 2/7.

Eight games into the season, they boast the second best power play (36.1-per cent) and second best penalty kill (85.7-per cent) in the Western Hockey League. Taking a closer look at the numbers, the ‘Canes’ power play has scored nearly half of their goals this season, making up 13 of their 27 total.

With the win in hand, the Hurricanes return home to the ENMAX Centre for a seven game home stand. It begins with a matchup against the Swift Current Broncos on Friday (Oct. 20).

The two teams met just last week, with the Broncos winning 6-2 in front of their home crowd.
