Crews battling grassfire near Hilda

MEDICINE HAT –  Drivers travelling on Highway 41 should drive carefully, as firefighters work to contain a grassfire in the region.

According to a Tweet from Alberta 511, the fire is located near Hilda on Highway 41 and Highway 545. According to the Tweet, the smoke from the fire was impacting visibility for drivers.

Highway 41 has closed as of 2:17 p.m. due to the smoke, according to Alberta 511. According to Cypress County Fire Chief Kelly Mayer, firefighters from Box Springs, Seven Persons, Irvine, Walsh, Schuler and Hilda are battling the fire. He added firefighters from neighbouring communities, including Richmound and Special Areas. Mayer says the fire start shortly after 1 p.m., and the high winds are making it difficult to battle. The cause of the fire is not known at this point.

There is no word yet on injuries or the amount of property damage. A news release from the RCMP says residents in Hilda are being told to get ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
