LETHBRIDGE – They are ranked as one of the best teams in the WHL, and they proved that at Enmax Centre Friday night.

The Swift Current Broncos outscored and out played the Lethbridge Hurricanes, even though the ‘Canes outshot them 35-25.

The Broncos opened the scoring well into the first period at 14:05, with a goal from Sahvan Khaira. That was followed moments later by the ‘Canes Jordy Bellerive at 14:59. Just before the period ended, the Broncos’ Tyler Steenburgen lit the lamp, making it a 2-1 Broncos lead at the break.

Swift Current kept up the momentum in the second, with goals from Heponiemi and Steenbergen with his second and third of the night while the Hurricanes’  Dylan Cozins scored the Canes lone goal of the period, assisted by Calen Addison and goalie Stuart Skinner on the power play at 17:04.

Skinner was replaced by Reece Klassen to start the third period. Despite a strong effort in the third, with goals from  Bellerive, and  Zane Franklin, the deficit was too much to overcome.

Steenburgen scored the insurance goal at 15:38, his 4th of the evening, putting the game out of reach for the hometown Canes.

All three game stars went to Swift Current.

The Hurricanes are now 4-5-0-0, while the Broncos are 9-1-0-0.

Next game for the ‘Canes goes Sunday, Oct. 22 against the Medicine Hat Tigers. Game time, 6 p.pm.
