City seeking input on affordable housing, homelessness

LETHBRIDGE – The city says it wants to hear from as many people as possible to help inform its strategic planning on homelessness and affordable housing.

The community conversation, as it’s being called, is an event aimed at hearing insights and experiences. Shauna Cox, Housing First specialist for the City of Lethbridge, said they’re eager to hear from the community.

“We feel that the work that we’re doing should be really partnered strongly with community,” Cox explained. “We want to make sure that anybody that has a vested interest, that their voices are heard and that they’re at the table.”

It’s part of a series of consultations being done by the Community and Social Development department. Cox said facilitators will help participants share stories and speak openly, in small cafe-style groups.

She explained their efforts have targeted a number of partners and stakeholder groups.

“We’ve gone to the shelters to speak to clients there,” Cox said. “We’ve spoken to partnering agencies in the community, service providers, front line staff; and for the community session we just want to make sure that we give anybody that feels that they want to speak to us, or has some ideas, or wants to learn more the opportunity to come and meet with us.”

The community conversation is Friday, Oct. 27 from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the Culver City Community Room at City Hall. Cox said they want people to register in advance, so they have an idea of numbers.
