MEDICINE HAT – A suspicious item left in front of a financial institution led to a lenghty street closure in Medicine Hat’s Crescent Heights neighbourhood Thursday, Oct. 26.

The item was found outside Servus Credit Union on 8th St. NW shortly after 4 p.m.

According to Staff Sgt. Kelsey Fraser, police received a call from someone on the street, saying they saw the item was left in front of the bank by another person.  Businesses on the street were closed as a precaution.

The Explosive Disposal Unit was called in to remotely render the device safe. The Forensic Unit has examined the scene, and re-opened the street as of 8 p.m.

An earlier release from the police service indicated the item was initially believed to be an improvised explosive device. Police have confirmed the item left in front of the bank was not an explosive.

The investigation is currently in its early stages, but police say there is no concern for public safety at this time.
