LETHBRIDGE – An 18-year-old man is fighting a ticket under the School Act, for allegedly disturbing the proceeding of a school.

Mohammad Farawan appeared in a Lethbridge courtroom Tuesday, Nov. 21, where he entered a plea of not guilty and had the matter set for trial.

On the evening of Sept. 25, 2017, members of the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) responded to reports of what they called “suspicious posts referencing Chinook High School” that were circulated on social media.

One of the photos was of a pencil case full of bullets and another showed a firearm lying on top of a package of cigarettes, with “Chinook High School” written across both pictures.

Police spoke with numerous complainants and the west side high school was notified of the situation early the next morning. Multiple officers were deployed to the school before classes started for the day, to ensure the safety of staff and students.

Shortly before 8:30 a.m., an 18-year-old male student was taken into custody at the school without incident and interviewed in relation to the posts.

In a media release from LPS, they say an investigation determined there was no intent to cause harm to anyone and the student apologized for his extremely poor judgement.

Farawan’s trial is scheduled for June 14, 2018.
