Fire ban issued for Lethbridge’s River Valley area

Dec 13, 2017 | 3:06 PM

LETHBRIDGE – Effective immediately and until further notice, there is a fire ban in the river valley area of Lethbridge.

City Chief Fire Marshal Heath Wright says that means there can be no open fires anywhere in the area.

The last fire ban affected the whole city in mid-October, one day after a number of wildfires sprung up around southern Alberta.

The County of Lethbridge is also monitoring the situation and will likely make a decision next week if moisture levels don’t improve.

Currently, there is a “fire advisory” for the Lethbridge and Vulcan Counties meaning open fires are not permitted if winds are greater than 15 km/hr.

Fire advisories are also in effect in the Municipal Districts of Pincher Creek and Taber.

According to Environment Canada, there has been no precipitation at all in Lethbridge so far in December, and only 2.7 mm of rain for the entire month of November.
