Lawyer from Piikani Nation appointed judge in Calgary
CALGARY – A member of the Piikani Nation has been appointed as a judge by the provincial government.
Karen A. Crowshoe was appointed to Provincial Court of Alberta, Calgary Criminal, Wednesday, Dec. 13. A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Crowshoe has been a member of the bar in Alberta since 1994. Her experience involves treaty rights and specific claims, on-reserve economic development, and First Nations governance.
She has also taught Native Studies at the University of Lethbridge and Red Crow Community College.
In a news release, acting justice minister and Solicitor General Marlin Schmidt said Crowshoe’s community ties, background and experience will make her an “exceptional” addition to the court.
