Tigers down Lethbridge 4-2 with burst of energy in the third period

Dec 27, 2017 | 9:13 PM

MEDICINE HAT – The two teams may have been trying to find their arena legs in the first period, after more than a week off for the Christmas break. The period was scoreless with two minor penalties – both lodged against the Canes’ Taylor Ross, for delay of game and cross checking. The Canes outshot the Tigers 13-12 and won 13 of 24 faceoffs.

Lethbridge began he second frame shorthanded due to Taylor Ross’s cross-checking penalty seconds before the buzzer sounded to end the first.

The first goal of the game, and the 18th of the season for Jordy Bellerive, came at the 5:28 mark on a power play, with help from Calen Addison and Taylor Ross. The Canes were able to hold onto the single goal lead to the end of the period, as both teams notched nine shots-on-goal.

The Tigers appear to have saved most of their energy for the final period, as they tied the game just before the five-minute mark, on a power-play goal from David Quenneville. Then, half way through the period, Max Gerlach put the Tigers ahead 2-1.

However, 20 seconds later, the Canes’ Lane Zablocki tied the game 2-2, assisted by Giorgio Estephan and Taylor Ross. The back-and-forth continued, with the Tigers again pulling ahead 3-2, after taking advantage of a power-play at 17:24. Then, 20 seconds before the buzzer, David Quenneville lobbed another one through the pipes for the win, as Medicine Hat downed the Canes 4-2.

In the end, the Tigers out-shot the Canes 40-29. Reece Klassen made 36 saves for Lethbridge as he took the place of a sick Stuart Skinner.

The Tigers opened the second half of the season in first place in the Central Division, six points ahead of second place Lethbridge, which is where the two teams remain in the standings. The Canes, at 15-16-2-0, have a game in hand.

The second half of the home and home takes places in Lethbridge Friday night, as the Canes host the Tigers at the Enmax.
