LETHBRIDGE – A tough weekend on the ice has the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns feeling the pinch in the standings.

A home-and-home series against the Mount Royal Cougars began on Friday night (Jan. 12) in Calgary.

The Cougars took the lead four times in a back-and-forth affair as they dealt the Lethbridge Pronghorns a 5-3 loss at the Flames Community Arenas.

Ryan Chynoweth, Ryon Moser, and Russell Maxwell all scored for the Pronghorns in the loss.

That set up an interesting Saturday night (Jan. 13) game back in Lethbridge, with the Cougars and Pronghorns separated by just two points heading into the night.

A scoreless tie would hold until late in the 3rd period when Mount Royal’s Connor Rankin scored to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead.

A few minutes later Justin Valentino answered to send the game to overtime where Luke Simpson scored to give Mount Royal the victory. Goaltender Garret Hughson made 42 saves in the loss.

The Pronghorns record is now 8-10-2, three points behind both the Cougars and UBC Thunderbirds, and three points ahead of the Calgary Dinos.

Pronghorns head coach Spiros Anastas says Saturday was another even game, as expected.

“Both goalies rebounded from incredibly average performances the night before and stood on their heads,” he continued. “At the end of the day, we have to find ways to score. We had chance after chance and we didn’t capitalize.”

Lethbridge will head out the road next weekend when they travel to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds.

“The loss stings a bit, but a point is always good in a tight playoff race. We have a big opportunity against UBC next weekend,” Anastas added.
