COALDALE – The second half of the Heritage Junior B hockey season is off to a roaring start for the Coaldale Copperheads.

The Copperheads came out of the break on Friday, Jan. 5 with a 5-2 win over the Cochrane Generals, before dropping a 4-3 overtime decision to the Strathmore Wheatland Kings on Saturday, Jan. 6.

This past weekend saw the Copperheads post a pair of wins as they close in on first place in the Southern Division.

First up was a 7-3 shellacking of the Medicine Hat Cubs on Friday night (Jan. 12).

Rookie forward Jayden Bexte led the way with a hat trick, while Sam Paskuski, Tyler Anderson, Levi Anderson each had a goal and two assists. Goaltender Andrew Suriano made 32 saves in the victory.

Coaldale returned home to the Snake Pit on Saturday night (Jan. 13) against the High River Flyers, and came away with a 5-2 victory.

Five different players scored for the Copperheads, as Chase Williamson, Brandyn Howg, Jayden Smith, Brandon Langridge, and Sam Paskuski got in on the action.

Suriano, starting on back-to-back nights, made 24 saves for his 8th win of the season.

The 3-0-1 run over the past two weekends has the Copperheads sitting at 17-9-2 on the season, good for 36 points. That’s tied with Okotoks for third place in the Southern Division.

Things are tight at the top of the division, with both Cochrane (18-11-1) and High River (17-11-3) sitting with 37 points.

Working in Coaldale’s favor is the fact they have two games in hand on Cochrane, and three on High River.

The Copperheads will have a chance to make up the difference this weekend with a pair of road games on the schedule.

Coaldale heads to Three Hills to take on the Thrashers Saturday night (Jan. 20), a team boasting a single win on the season, before heading to Strathmore to battle the 11-14-2 Wheatland Kings on Sunday night (Jan. 21).
