KELOWNA – The Lethbridge Hurricanes overcame a 3-1 deficit midway through their Wednesday night (Jan. 17) game against the Kelowna Rockets, but ultimately lost 4-3 in overtime following a goal by Rockets defenceman Cal Foote.

For the second night in the row the Hurricanes got on the board early. Jordy Bellerive’s 26th goal of the season just 42 seconds into the first period gave the ‘Canes a 1-0 lead.

Kelowna would even the score at 8:08 when forward Dillon Dube put the puck past Hurricanes goaltender Reese Klassen.

The first period would come to a close with that 1-1 score holding, the Rockets held the edge in shots in the opening frame 15-9.

Just over four minutes in the second period, the Rockets would get the lead for the first time when Kole Lind scored to make it 2-1.

Then Conner Bruggen-Cate scored shorthanded at 8:52 to stretch the Kelowna lead to 3-1.

With their back-up in net, and the game beginning to get away from them, the Hurricanes as they’ve been doing a lot lately managed to answer.

Tate Olson’s first goal of the year at 13:27 of the second period cut the Rockets lead to 3-2, and that’s how the middle frame would finish.

Shots after two periods still favoured Kelowna, 28-15.

The Hurricanes momentum carried into the third period, where they would outshoot the Rockets 12-5 in the frame before Taylor Ross would bury his 14th of the season to tie the game 3-3.

Shots after 60 minutes were 34-30 in favour of Kelowna.

In the extra frame after successfully killing off a penalty, Cal Foote came out of the box and buried the game winner at 2:55 which gave the Rockets a 4-3 win.

With the overtime loss, the Hurricanes record on the season drops to 21-19-4, now just three points ahead of the Kootenay Ice for second place in the Central Division.

The Hurricanes five game BC road trip continues this weekend when the team heads to Prince George, for a pair of games against the Cougars on Friday (Jan. 19) and Saturday night (Jan. 20).
