LETHBRIDGE – There won’t be any curtain calls at the Genevieve Yates Memorial Centre in Lethbridge until this summer.

According to a news release from the city, asbestos has been found in some of the materials, so a special removal process has to be followed to ensure safety and adherence to environmental requirements.

The expected opening date will be sometime around mid-July.

The theatre is undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, including making the facility more accessibe with barrier-free washroom upgrades, the addition of elevators, signage, and a concrete floor under the auditorium.

Renovations were originally expected to be completed this spring.

The city is working with groups that were booked into the theatre, to secure other performance spaces for them in the meantime.

Despite the delays, the project remains on budget.
