Traffic circles/diversions on 7 Avenue South a good thing, says neighborhood association

LETHBRIDGE  – It has been a few months since the roundabouts and traffic diversions have been installed on 7 Avenue South in the London Road area. And while there have been some vocal critics, London Road Neighborhood Assocation Vice President  Kate Conolly says overall, they’ve been well received- at least by locals.

“My feeling is, that a lot of the opposition to this comes from commuters from outside the neighborhood who have got used to using it as a short-way through, you know, when the lights are on red at certain streets, they can cut down through the neighborhood and link up again, you know, with say, 13 St., and I do think it’s prevented a lot of that.”

Conolly says the whole neighborhood now seems quieter and more pleasant than it has been in the last several years.

She adds that after speaking with several dozen residents, most of the people who live in the area agree that the traffic circles and the speed limit reduction to 30 km/h is a good thing, and they apreciate that fewer people are driving through the neighborhoods, using 7 Avenue South as a shortcut.

“I’m sure people will adapt to the roundabouts.”

The traffic circles were installed after a series of public input sessions and feedback, to create the first dedicated bike boulevard in the city.

There has been some concern from area residents however, that some drivers are trying to circumvent the diversions by driving over them, or driving up onto the sidewalks to avoid having to turn off 7 Ave. S.
